How we created a Peter Pan set
Recently, I was approached by a theatrical company and asked to design and build a Peter Pan set for an amateur dramatic performance they were putting on.
After listening to the brief and their ideas of what they were looking for, I began conjuring up images in my mind of what the set would look like, keeping in mind an idea that meets their expectations and works within their budget.
The idea is always to build something that gives the performance a wow factor, conveying the mood of the performance and enhancing the audience experience.
Sketch it out
After several large coffees and numerous conversations, we started to come up with a concept.
With sketchbooks at the ready, we began to jot down all our ideas, and we normally went through quite a few until we settled on the one we were happy with.
The devil’s in the detail
From here, we started thinking about the details of the set. What would a Peter Pan set need to bring the image to life and convey the message to the audience?
A pirate ship, Captain Hook, the look of old wood resembling an old galleon ship, skull and crossbones to tell the story of pirates, Captain Hook’s ropes, lanterns, ship’s wheel, banister rail, ship’s sails, and more.
Computer imagery
Once we were happy with the overall design, our very clever tech team embedded the images into a CAD program so we could send them to our clients for approval.
Again, it might take several attempts and lots of tweaking to get them just right, but once the client is happy, it’s full steam ahead in the workshop.
Workshop, this is where the magic happens!
Once our client was satisfied with the set, our creative team set to work making the set pieces and props before bringing them to life by adding paint and special effects.
Time to build
Arriving at the theatre, we set to work, firstly by building the basic structure that the set is based upon and then adding in the stage flats and manufactured pieces. Four hours later and some fine-tuning, the set comes together.
The finished set
This stunning Captain hook pirate ship has plenty of detail, including moveable ships wheel, captain’s cabin door that allows access to the set from back of the stage for a dramatic entrance, and portholes that can be backlit.
